Brooklyn Public Libraries

Grain partnered with the Brooklyn Public Library system on the design and transformation of four distinct branches—each shaped by deep community engagement and grounded in the needs, stories, and aspirations of their surrounding neighborhoods. From honoring historic sites and expanding access in underserved areas to shaping new programs and spaces, Grain’s approach ensured that every library reflected the voices of those it serves.

Adams Street Library

Grain led an inclusive engagement process to help shape the Adams Street Library—the first branch serving DUMBO, Vinegar Hill, and Farragut. By partnering with community groups, schools, businesses, and residents, Grain ensured the design, programs, and collections reflected the area’s diverse needs. Opened in 2021, the library now serves as a vibrant hub and anchor for the community.

Sunset Park Library

Grain developed a clear roadmap for the design and programming of the new Sunset Park Library by engaging residents, organizations, and local partners. After defining goals with BPL, we conducted in-depth research, mapped neighborhood assets, and gathered input through 200+ multilingual surveys, focus groups, stakeholder meetings, and on-the-ground conversations. This collaborative process helped shape a library rooted in local needs, which opened in Fall 2023.

Central Library

Grain supported Brooklyn Public Library in engaging thousands of patrons and staff to inform the modernization of its flagship Central Library. Through surveys, events, focus groups, and exhibits, over 2,100 ideas shaped new spaces, including a dedicated teen area and an adult learning center—enhancing access and aligning the library with evolving community needs.

New Lots Library

Grain led a thoughtful community engagement process for the redesign of BPL’s New Lots Library, partially sited on a historic African burial ground. Through sensitive conversations with residents, community leaders, and advocates, Grain built consensus around complex issues—from programming and design details to memorialization of the site. Community input directly shaped the new library, culminating in a celebratory unveiling embraced by those who helped bring it to life.
