Bushwick Community Visioning

The Brownfield Opportunity Area (BOA) revitalization plan for Bushwick, Brooklyn was built upon the concurrent community-driven Bushwick Community Plan. It aimed to protect and strengthen the community priorities by identifying feasible, site-specific strategies for revitalizing vacant, underutilized, and brownfield sites that advance community-ratified goals for affordable housing, economic and workforce development, and public health.

Toolkit for the BOA development

Development scenarios in support of the community vision were proposed for 15 strategic sites. In addition, a flexible toolkit was created to guide neighborhood-wide improvements to open spaces and the public realm components of Bushwick. To engage community partners and guide the Bushwick BOA, FSNNY and the project team enlisted the guidance of an astute and supportive Steering Committee representing the local community, service providers, economic and workforce experts, and city agencies. Throughout the BOA process, the committee offered invaluable insight, feedback, and guidance on issues ranging from existing conditions and community priorities to concept ideas, strategic site redevelopment scenarios, and final recommendations.
