Community Visioning for 240 Nassau

As an important community center for generations of local residents, 240 Nassau Street has a deep history for local communities. With the opportunity to develop new recreation facilities and affordable housing, it is essential that the site continues to serve long-time community members. For the development team—Alloy and GFB Development—integrating community narratives into the redesign process has been a key priority. Grain’s expertise in proactive community engagement helped unlock the potential for a robust and meaningful community input process.

Using the familiarity of the space as a resource, the project team’s approach gathered stakeholders for large events, complete with food, music, and entertainment from neighborhood arts organizations. Through fun activities and informal conversations, these trust-building environments gathered nuanced feedback for the future of the space. In-person events were coupled with an online survey, allowing for input from a wide range of local residents. Strong relationships and communication have been built through this process, establishing a foundation for years of productive collaboration.
