Empowering Change at Nostrand Houses
At the first NYCHA development to elect facilities and services modernization through the Public Housing Preservation Trust, Grain set a high bar for engagement, outreach, research, and analysis. Collaboration with residents and community leaders built a strong understanding of priorities, which were transformed into a comprehensive list of renovation and social service priorities, accompanied by an extensive directory of social service providers and funding opportunities.
The Trust model retains public management of public housing sites and makes residents a central part of the modernization process, all while providing comprehensive upgrades to facilities and social services. This project embodied the community-centered approach that the Trust can bring to future housing sites – a key element of Grain’s efforts was training an intergenerational team of Nostrand residents to support outreach and engagement. By the end of the project, the team had helped gather several hundred multi-lingual surveys offering insight into household needs.
