PROJECT SCOPE: Community Engagement
PROJECT STATUS: Completed
CLIENT: Rochester Public Library

2018

RPL’s branch libraries reach over 575,000 residents annually and hold more than 6,000 programs. Grain Collective was part of a team to help create a Master Plan for RPL that identifies strategies to optimize the physical and operational infrastructure of its ten library branches through enhanced library spaces, expanded access and innovative service design and delivery.

The process reached out to over 1,700 residents, RPL staff and service providers in focus groups, surveys, interviews and advisory meetings to identify community needs and priorities for the RPL branch system.

The process started with a threefold approach: an extensive assessment of existing branch facilities and service delivery; research on best practices from peer library systems across the US and finally a contextual assessment of Rochester’s physical and demographic landscape to identify social needs and community priorities. The final master plan will be used to guide future RPL investment and to plan for the library’s future growth and expanded role as a vital community resource.
